Chemistry is an interesting subject and the backbone of Science Courses including Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, Agriculture, Environmental Management and others yet many students, however, find it difficult to understand and pass in both internal and external exams.
This major concern propelled the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Osun Chapter to take a bold step towards changing this narrative, in her bid to complement the State Government’s efforts in the on-going educational sector reforms in the State.
CSN Partners with Osun State Ministry of Education to train 200 Chemistry Educators.
The Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) is a professional umbrella body of all Chemists and Chemical Scientists in the State. CSN, in collaboration with the Osun State Ministry of Education, is organizing a Chemistry Educators Workshop tagged “Empower Chemistry Educators 1.0” to hold on Thursday, 16th September, 2021 at the Lecture Theatre, Osun State University, Main Campus, Osogbo by 10:00am.
The theme of the workshop is “Chemistry Education in the 21st Century” focusing on new trends in Chemistry Education and Mastery of Chemistry Practicals as a bedrock for sound chemical practice and industrial development in Nigeria.
The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Osun State, Hon. Folorunsho Oladoyin Bamisayemi will be delivering a Keynote Address while the President, Chemical Society of Nigeria, Prof. Moses Nkem Chendo is the Special Guest of Honour.
The Resource Persons include: Dr. Isaac Bankole, National Deputy Vice President, South West Zone, a veteran Professor of Chemistry at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Prof. John Adekunle Oyekunle.
Other speakers include Ag. Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Kehinde Olaniyan and the Ilesa born international award winning Chemistry Tutor at Caleb British International School, Lagos; Microsoft Innovation Educator Expert and 2021 State Winner-Best Private School Teacher in Lagos State, Mr. Awoyemi Olaoluwa Samuel.
CSN Osun Chapter Chairperson, Dr. Esther O. Faboro (Lecturer, Bowen University, Iwo) while briefing AdasiScience correspondents at Osun State Capital, Osogbo said “The Workshop is aimed at building the capacity of Chemistry Teachers in the State which will further strengthen Chemistry education and practice”.
Also, the Program Coordinator and CSN Osun Vice Chairman, Mr. Isijaan A. Nkanta (an Ambassador of Chemistry in Nigeria) noted that the Workshop tagged “EMPOWER OSUN CHEMISTRY EDUCATORS WORKSHOP 1.0” is the maiden edition as the program is designed to become CSN Osun Chapter’s annual event.
“Our focus is to contribute our quota towards improving Science (Chemistry) Education in the State and to make Osun Chemistry Teachers become the very best in Nigeria”, Mr. Isijaan, the AdasiScience Founder, said.
Other stakeholders to participate in the Workshop include: Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Association of Muslim International Schools (AMIS), ANCOPPS among others.
Special guests expected at the event include the heads of Osun State owned tertiary institutions including Osun State University, Osun State College of Education Ilesa, Osun State Polytechnic Iree & others with the Vice Chancellor, Osun State University as Chief Host.
